TURBAN HAT DESIGN PROJECT TK09

The turban hat has come a long way over the years and the adaptation serves as another form of head tie for the Nigerian Women. This Exquisite hat is a must have for your wardrobe and the good thing is, you can make it yourself. Our fabric choice today is organza because of its soft but has a stiff texture it is a perfect selection for this style. But remember the choice is yours; you do your own thang! Join us as we venture into the world of art and crafts


Supplies needed

·         Wooden hat mold

·         Hat wire

·         Cinnamon

·         Sewing & cutting materials

·         Hat stiffener

·         Glue

·         4 yards Organza material ( optional )

·         Scissors & tape measurer

·         Hammer/ thumb nails

·         Plastic or nylon bag

·         Vaseline

·         Small Paint brush

Step1

You can find hat supplies where hat making materials are sold in your local market.

Take your turban hat mold and rub Vaseline all over. Cover with your nylon bag tying at the bottom.

The nylon will allow the cinnamon hat frame to eventually slide gently off the mold when needed Figure (A)

Taking your cinnamon (figure B) stretch tightly over your mold and secure with nails using a hammer

Step 2

Mix your stiffener with water, making sure it’s equally mixed and has a light pasty consistency.

Using your paint brush spread your paste on the cinnamon hat mold covering the whole area fully.

Let dry over night for best results. (Figure C)  When dry remove from mold (Figure D)

 Step 3

After your hat has been removed from the mold trim the excess cinnamon from the bottom edge.

(Figure E).




Step 4

Using your tape measure determine the length of your hat bottom and cut your wire adding 3 inched for over lapping. Sew the wire around the entire hat using the basting stitch. (Figure G)

Cut matching lining to fit your hat sizing as you go along.  (Figure H)

Step 5


Use 1 inch bias tape to cover the raw edge, sewing down the wire as well as the lining as you go along. (Figure I)

Step 6

To make your fabric easy to work with cut 2 yards. Fold in half and cut long strips on the bias about 5 to 6 inches wide cut edges in a v angel or point. Figure K

Cut a round piece for the top of your hat double if your fabric is too thin. Spread your glue around the upper sides and lay the round piece. Make sure your glue is on the edges and not touching the top of the hat. Take the long organza strips and fold in half using a needle and tread begin tacking your strip at the top of you hat. (Figure L)

 Step 7

Continue tacking forming a rose as you go around the top of the hat. (Figure M)

When the top is fully covered hold the excess down with glue or just  tack down with needle and thread (Figure N)

Step 8

Continue down the sides glue around the edge as shown in (Figure O). Fold the organza strips in half and wrap around your hat, gluing as you go around as shown in (Figure P)

Step 9


To finalize the turban hat cut a 2 yard by 45”  divide in half and cut the long length using 1 half of your fabric fold down the center  and sew around the edges leaving space to turn fabric inside out. Hand stitch the open making all edges neat and smooth.  (Figure O) tack the extension to the center back of your hat and Style to your taste.
